How to Secure a Strong One

Teachers in the Northern Virginia area do not get paid to write letters of recommendation. As such, many cap the number they are willing to write. Note your guidance counselor always writes one.
.

To secure a strong letter, ForWord recommends
  • You plan for five recommenders from the following categories
    • At least one math/science teacher
    • At least one liberal arts/other teacher
    • One coach, scout leader, religious leader, employer
  • You ask first by email and follow up in person.
    • Email: to determine turnaround time and check the quality of their writing
    • Person: for respect.
  • You include your resume and/or brag sheet that documents some of the moments you've shared with that person or highlights.
  • You ask in April and remind the teacher again in June.
