Planning a Career and Major
Northern Virginia Resources |
Who am I? What makes me unique? What do I have to offer an employer? How do I fit into the workforce? How important is money for your future? Would you like to work with your hands? Do you want to wear a tie or pantyhose? Do you want set hours?
Choosing a future is more than picking a career. ForWord's experienced professional can guide you toward a well-suited major by asking you a series of focused, directed questions--and listening to your responses. |
I highly recommend College Exploration Consulting, a Northern Virginia company run by Dr. Katie Boone.

Dr. Katie Boone works with high school students to explore their future plans. She leads them through an individual assessment and discusses possible majors and occupations as they begin the college application process. Selecting a college can be daunting and not fully understanding your strengths and skills can inhibit that process. Students do not necessarily need to select a major right now, but it does help to have an idea. She helps with that conversation by exploring their strengths and skills and identifying how those can lead to a career path. All the puzzle pieces are there, it is about learning to fit them together.
There are two sessions lasting 1-1/2 hours each at your home. She meets with parents first and then the students. Katie uses a terrific product that has 5 different assessments: work interest, values, personality, leisure and skills. The results are then matched to possible occupations and majors, which starts a conversation. There is a report generated at the completion of both meetings.
She charges $225.00 for the two sessions. The fee includes access to the database, which has the occupation and major search; and, also includes a college search of all accredited colleges in the US, a notes feature, resume and other unique features to further explore interests and options.
Katie has a Masters degree in guidance and counseling and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. She has worked in Higher Education for 25+ years, both in student affairs and as a professor, and currently teaches at the university level. She is a native Arlingtonian and has also worked in Arlington Public Schools. She is certified in 4 different skills assessments and researched extensively before selecting this product, in particular to assist students with not only exploring what they want to do but in also making the connection to college selection. She has worked with students at all stages of the transition to college and understands the stress involved for both students and their parents, and she would love the opportunity to work with your children.
Katie is available to set up an appointment after school or on the weekends. Here is her contact information
